Who we are
MAGILABS is a result of co-operation between two gemologists, Mikko Åström FGA and Alberto Scarani GG.
The project began in 2011 when it was found the combination of experience between the two allowed designing & building GemmoRaman™ – the world’s first fully automatic gem material identification instrument.
Today MAGILABS is the world leader in development of portable spectroscopic equipment for gemology field. Our portable Raman-PL, UV-Vis-NIR and FTIR spectrometers are well known and used by most gemological laboratories worldwide.
The Accredited Gemologists Association awarded Alberto Scarani Mikko and Åström of the 2019 Antonio C. Bonanno Award for Excellence in Gemology with the following motivation:
“Alberto Scarani and Mikko Åström, co-founders of MAGI Labs. Scarani and Aström are recognized for
adapting advanced spectroscopy technology to the gemological field, making it accessible and affordable
to all gemologists. This was most notable from their Gemmoraman system, a major breakthrough for
gemologists and appraisers as it placed portable and reliable Raman & Photoluminescence spectroscopy
capabilities at their fingertips. Prior to this, such technology and the detailed database critical to accurate
results were typically only accessible through universities and major laboratories.”
Meet the team
Mikko Åström FGA
Mikko is a gemologist FGA (with Distinction), software & database engineer, laboratory technician and entrepreneur having more than 25 years of experience as a gemologist, head of the diploma courses of Gem-A teaching center in Finland and author of gemological articles and course materials. He has worked extensively in the field of gemological spectroscopy, designing and inventing UV-Vis-NIR, Raman, PL, FTIR, EDXRF and other laboratory instruments. He is a co-founder and CEO of company Magilabs Oy (Ltd) specialized in manufacturing of advanced gemological instruments. Mikko has lectured extensively about spectroscopy of diamonds and colored gems in various conferences and workshops including Gem-A, HRD and IGE. In 2019, he received together with Alberto Scarani the Antonio C. Bonanno Award for Excellence in Gemology from the Accredited Gemologists Association.
Alberto Scarani GG
Alberto Scarani is a Graduate Gemologist (IGI Antwerp), appraiser of the Chamber of Commerce, and Registered Expert of the Tribunal of Rome. With Mikko Åström founded in 2012 the M&A Gemological Instruments, now Magilabs, a company specialized in manufacturing advanced gemological instruments and developed Raman,/PL, UV-Vis-NIR, FTIR, and Fluorescence spectrometers specifically designed for gemology. He is the former Vice-president of the Scientific Committee of Assogemme and has been a member of the UNI Commission “UNI/CT 010/GL 01 - Gemme e metalli preziosi” for the revision of UNI rules about Gems and precious metals and representative delegate for the development of the bill about gemological materials at the X Commission of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament. He lectured seminars and workshops about advanced spectroscopy for gemology at Gem-A, AGA, HRD, MGJC, IGE, and Rome, Naples, Bari, and Florence Universities. Jewelry & gemology author and journalist, he wrote many articles for Preziosa Magazine and VIORO, he is currently one of the editorial directors of the Rivista Italiana di Gemmologia. (Italian Gemological Review). In 2019, he received together with Mikko Åström the Antonio C. Bonanno Award for Excellence in Gemology from the Accredited Gemologists Association. In 2022 he expanded the operations of MAGILABS by establishing MAGILABS USA in Houston, Texas
